The TRUTH About Bacon
If you bring up the subject that you eat Bacon everyone immediately says Bacon is bad for you. I can’t believe you eat that.

They act as if you are destined for heart disease, becoming fat and anything else imaginable.

Unfortunately for them this way of thinking is a terrible misconception.

The FACTS are that bacon is a much better addition to your diet than the sugary foods most people eat for breakfast.

When chosen correctly bacon is not an unhealthy food. By reading this article you will learn why you should add bacon to your diet and how to do it properly.
So What Is Bacon?
Bacon is actually a cured meat that traditionally comes from a pig. Cured meat is a natural way to prevent meat from spoiling by using sales and often nitrites.

It usually comes from either these parts of the pig: belly, back or side. The amount of fat that is in the bacon usually depends on how fat the pig is.

Yes, you can buy bacon made from turkey, but if you actually look at the label of turkey bacon it usually contains a laundry list of ingredients. Some of those ingredients include hydrolyzed corn gluten, soy protein, wheat gluten, silicon dioxide and disodium inosinate.
Do The Europeans Have The Answer?
Pork is everywhere all over Germany. They have bacon, sausage lard and no parts of the pig are left unused. If you also look at their body types they are not as overweight as Americans and do not tend to suffer from the same chronic diseases at the level that we do as Americans.

They also use lard for most of their baking and cooking. Years ago the belief in the U.S. was that the fat from a pig was all saturated fat and that is what was causing us to be overweight and unhealthy. So we started using hydrogenated plant oils and as we found out make us fatter, sicker and even more unhealthy.
Why Is Bacon Good For Us?
To understand why bacon is a good choice for us let’s take a quick look at the nutritional facts.

If you take 1 Tbsp of pure lard you will see that it has an even balance of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. Along with some polyunsaturates and cholesterol. Most importantly it doesn’t contain any trans fats.

Here is what it contains:

* 5.9 grams of saturated fats
* 6.4 grams of monounsaturated fats
* 2 grams of polyunsaturated fats (primarily omega-6)
* 14 mg cholesterol

If you compare this to vegetable shortening which supposedly was to be healthier you will see they don’t really compare.

Vegetable shortening:

* 3.8 grams of saturated fats
* 6.7 grams of monounsaturated fats
* 3.9 grams of polyunsaturated fats (primarily omega-6)
* 2 grams of trans fats (man-made)

The main difference is the trans fats which researchers are now understanding was a huge mistake in saying it was healthier. Trans fats have been linked directly to heart disease morbidity and mortality.
Saturated Fat Is Not As Bad As We Think It Is
Experts and researchers have made a point to show that science tells us that the saturated fats from natural sources like meat, dairy and even oils such as coconut oil are not as bad as we once thought they were.

We understand it is hard to change our way of thinking since mass media has preached such bad things about saturated fats for so many years. It is important to realize that the push for these other oils ended up making us fatter, sicker and even more unhealthy.

The facts are that saturated fats like those found in bacon CAN fit into your healthy diet.

Does It Contain Too Many Omega-6 Fats?
Since bacon doesn’t contain any Omega-3 fats and only a small amount of Omega-6 fats some people feel this isn’t good because in general our diets consist of too many omega-6 fats and not enough omega-3 fats.

While this may be true if the rest of your diet consists of foods that are higher in omega-3 fats such as cold-water fish like salmon and certain nuts you should have a nice balance between the two.

We do need omega-6 fats in our diet, but the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should ideally be a 1:1 ratio.

To help balance that ratio out if you don’t like Salmon or certain nuts you can consume a krill oil supplement to consume your omega-3 fats.
How To Choose Healthy Bacon
Now that you know the facts about bacon and that it is not bad for you and that it won’t harm your health don’t go out and start eating it by the pound every single day. There still needs to be a balance with consumption.

First thing you need to do is look for bacon that is nitrite free.

Nitrite is used as a preservative to help prevent spoilage. It is also a known carcinogen and is related to an increased risk of cancer.

Choosing natural nitrite free bacon is your best choice.

Regardless of what you do with your meal planning just remember that bacon is not bad for you and can be a part of your healthy meal plans.
