Paleo: Are We Meant To Eat Like A Caveman?
The premise of the popular Paleo diets is to eat like the caveman did. We now rely too much on processed foods and if we instead ate more natural foods instead of man-made foods we would be healthier and less overweight.

That is the thinking anyways…

The paleo diet consists of meat from grass-fed animals, wild caught fish, nuts, seeds, fruit, vegetables along with eggs. Also, included in the the paleo meal plans are plant based oils such as flaxseed, avocado and coconut oil.

What is not included in a paleo meal plan are grains, cereals, beans, peanuts, potatoes, dairy products and of course processed foods or refined sugars.

The whole idea is to mimic the type of foods our ancestors ate before we invented commercial farming.

Why Should We Eat This Way?

Now there is plenty of controversy and opinion on if the cavemen were really any healthier than us. One argument is they didn’t usually live past reproductive age so how do we know if they were healthier since their lifespan was maybe half of what it is today.

The other side says our genes and DNA haven’t changed much in the hundreds of generations that have come before us which means our bodies were built and still are today built to live and thrive off of food that is hunted, fished or gathered in a natural environment.
The one thing that everyone agrees on is that we should mimic the physical activity levels of our ancestors and the avoidance of highly processed foods and refined sugars.

Our modern diet contains too much sugar and empty calories.

The argument will continue on whether or not we should be eating the way of the Paleo era or which foods were truly eaten and not eaten during those times as well as in different parts of the world.

To start though eating more naturally grown foods is a good thing. So creating your meals plans to include meat or fish along with a variety of vegetables is good. You can even include some grains as archeologists have found some hunter-gatherers in certain parts of the world were eating barley and other grains. They have even found mortars and pestles that were used to grind the grain into flour or other forms of food consumption.
Take Home Message:

Just don’t go overboard like we tend to do as a society. Stick to these basics and you will be eating 80% better than the average American diet. The benefits will include less storage of fat, healthier blood marker numbers and so forth.

I understand that meal planning can be a challenge to be consistent with it.
